A striking antique tramp-art crucifix, featuring a hand-carved and intricately incised wooden cross mounted to a stepped wooden reliquary box. The cross and box are decorated with the layered geometric carving characteristic of tramp art, while the hand-painted figure of Christ retains traces of original white and gilt decoration. A small INRI plaque and Latin inscription reading Crucifixus pro nobis add to its devotional character. An exceptionally tactile and sculptural example of folk art.
Dimensions: 10”L × 6”D x 23”H
The piece is in antique condition with expected age-related wear throughout. The carved wood has surface wear, small losses and abrasions consistent with age. The painted figure exhibits areas of paint loss, discoloration and rubbing, particularly to the body, hands and feet. The carved box has additional edge wear and minor losses to the decoration.
