Antique English Workbench from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, Possible Kitchen Island | Circa 1890
Found in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, this substantial English workbench embodies the honest craftsmanship and enduring utility of a traditional workshop piece. Built from thick pine timbers, it features a generous plank top with a rich patina developed through decades of use, a deep full-width drawer with a sliding and/or removable divided organizer, and a full lower shelf that offers abundant storage. Every surface bears the character of its working life, from old tool marks and wear to the naturally aged finish that makes each piece unique.
We think this piece would work perfectly as a large kitchen island, preparation table, studio worktable, or retail display. It’s an authentic English workbench that bears exceptional scale, warmth, and functionality with impressive proportions and unmistakable industrial character make it a striking focal point in any space.
Note: the piece comes with newer castors attached at the base of each leg. For better aesthetics, and to return the piece to its original working form, we recommend removing the castors once it’s in its final resting place.
Additional note: while traveling on the shipping container across the pond, one of the legs sustained some damage where the castor is attached. Please see photos. Damage does not impact functionality.
Dimensions:
90" L x 28.5" D x 34" H
Lower Shelf: 72" L x 26.5" D
The workbench displays expected wear consistent with age and use, including scattered tool marks, surface scratches, old repairs, age-related splits to the top, and wear to the lower corners of the base. It has been fitted with later casters for ease of movement while preserving its original character.
