Art: Antique Oil on Canvas, Landscape Scene w/ Provincial Road, Guilt Frame, Signed | Circa 1900
A charming turn-of-the-century oil on canvas landscape, depicting a quiet rural scene with a winding path, stone wall, and a lone tree anchoring the composition. The painterly brushwork and soft, natural palette give the piece a calm, atmospheric quality, while small details—like the red-roofed cottage in the distance—add depth and narrative.
Presented in a gilt frame that complements the warmth of the scene, this piece embodies the timeless appeal of European landscape painting from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Dimensions
28.5” W x 21” H
Easel not included
Good antique condition. The surface shows visible craquelure and some vertical lines consistent with age and canvas movement. Areas of uneven varnish and minor discoloration are present. There are scattered surface marks and light wear, particularly visible in the sky. Frame shows age-appropriate wear including small losses and scuffs to the gilt finish. Canvas is stable and the painting presents well overall.
The paper label on the reverse references Johan Johansson (1879–1951), born in Lund, Sweden. It notes his training in drawing and sculpture, studies in Germany (including Strasbourg), and further education at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. It also mentions that he traveled and studied in countries such as Italy and France, and that his work is represented in several Scandinavian museum collections.
