17th Century English Carved Oak Coffer | Dated 1684
An exceptional 17th-century English carved oak coffer, boldly dated 1684, featuring a richly hand-carved three-panel façade with geometric diamond motifs, stylized foliate carving, and a beautifully detailed frieze. The deep, dark oak has developed a rich patina over more than three centuries, highlighting the craftsmanship and age of the piece.
The hinged plank lid opens to reveal a generous storage compartment, making this an equally practical and decorative addition to a home. Original wrought iron carrying handles remain on each end, a wonderful surviving detail, and the hand-carved decoration continues across the lid, an uncommon level of embellishment.
Originally intended for storing household linens and valuables, this coffer now makes a striking blanket chest, coffee table, or statement piece at the foot of a bed. Its bold carving and historic date ensure it commands attention in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Dimensions:
42”W × 22.5”D × 17”H
Good antique condition consistent with more than 340 years of age. The chest retains its original character with expected wear including surface scratches, shrinkage cracks, scattered old repairs, and minor losses to the wood. The lid operates properly on later replacement hinges, and the original wrought iron side handles remain intact. The chest is structurally sound and presents beautifully, with wear that contributes to its authentic age and character.
